University of Cumbria chooses evasys to deliver its surveys

evasys is thrilled to announce that, after winning a competitive tender, it will be partnering with the University of Cumbria to deliver its surveys, initially focused on student module evaluations.

University of Cumbria achieves 100% closing the feedback loop

The real-world university experience of the evasys team, coupled with its product capability and approach to client engagement, ongoing support and training were the key strengths that shone through in the independent tender evaluation.

Jonathan Eaton, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Learning and Teaching at University of Cumbria, commented:

“With their experience at the coalface in higher education, the team at evasys have the ability to really understand the complexities of how universities operate; that there’s a technical infrastructure to be navigated, but there’s also a regulatory and policy environment that we exist within. There are natural challenges when working within a higher education environment, so working with technology partners that have a deep understanding of our context not only builds confidence in the project, but also helps university colleagues feel that they are getting the best possible advice in the work that they are doing to support the bigger programme.”

Working with evasys, the team at the University of Cumbria is able to harness decades of experience in HE survey design and analysis and will receive extensive support in progressing policy and process decisions, followed by their practical application.

Jonathan continued:

“In the EdTech field, virtually every supplier talks about working in partnership, but there are very few that actually do. What I’ve seen so far from evasys is that genuine commitment to working in partnership and to go above and beyond to meet our needs. There is substantial hidden value to an institution in the evasys team’s methodology. And that gives me confidence that we’re building the foundations of a collaborative approach to module evaluation that will last for years to come.”

What University of Cumbria aims to achieve with evasys

In June 2024, University of Cumbria launched a new Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Plan, with an emphasis on a deep commitment to strengthening their approach around student voice; hearing every student and using their feedback to provide actionable insights into the student experience.

One of the first steps in realising the LTA Plan was to introduce a consistent approach to module evaluation, with a view to achieving two specific aims. Firstly, to reduce manual processing and duplication of effort, allowing colleagues across the institution to invest more time and energy where it adds the most value for the student experience. Secondly, the University of Cumbria required a robust system for gathering data from across a very diverse student body operating out of multiple campuses as well as online.

Previously, the approach to module evaluation surveys at University of Cumbria was devolved locally, meaning that module leaders were responsible for creating and distributing surveys,  collating the results and analysing the data. Time was expended by individuals on these activities, and it was difficult to gather data together in a way that would be provide a whole organisational view of the student experience. With the advent of evasys as the tool used institution-wide for module evaluation, staff at University of Cumbria can focus more on closing the loop and acting on insights gathered.

The evasys approach at University of Cumbria

The evasys approach married perfectly with University of Cumbria’s commitment to enhancing the student experience and proactive approach to gathering and acting on student feedback.

The University is moving at real pace with the implementation, partnering with evasys and working in harmony on the implementation. The first surveys will be launched in November, meaning that the entire project implementation, from contract award to launch, will be completed in just a few months.

The updated process around module evaluation is a brand new way of operating for the University of Cumbria, and involves multiple stakeholders from across the university. The team at evasys have been committed to working with different groups of staff, attending meetings and providing lots of examples from other institutions that use evasys, allowing the University of Cumbria to accelerate thinking and enjoy a greater sense of confidence in their own approach.

With hands-on experience of working within the UK higher education sector, the evasys team has provided a range of additional support services during implementation to date to ensure that the University of Cumbria module evaluation solution gets off to the best start. This support includes a critical review across a range of processes, policies and procedures including the student record system integration, the Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA), student survey communications and survey questionnaires. The aim is to share knowledge and best practice that will accelerate the process, eliminate any process gaps and ensure a smooth, successful implementation.

Jonathan noted:

“Beyond the sophistication and flexibility of its solution, what sets evasys apart are two principal factors. Firstly, the commitment to provide a broad range and volume of specialist training and engagement in utilising the solution across the university and at different levels of the organisation. They recognised that there were diverse training and support needs for different staff within the university, from the super user to institute professional services and module leaders. And we recognised the huge value in that because it really extends our internal training capacity and offered a real wealth of support. Their resource commitment is unlimited, and from a team with hands-on experience of working within the UK higher education sector and in implementing survey solutions across a diverse range of higher education institutions.”

“The second element that makes evasys stand out is really fundamental to the step-change that the University is trying to achieve around the student voice, and that is the evasys Closing the Loop functionality. Having the in-built functionality to close the student feedback loop is an embodiment of the commitment we are making; that we’re not just listening to our students, we’re acting on their insights as well and we’re committed to doing this in partnership with them.”

Bruce Johnson, Managing Director at evasys, concluded:

“We’re obviously delighted to be working with Jonathan and the team at University of Cumbria as they implement their exciting new Learning, Teaching & Assessment Plan and move towards a more integrated approach to module evaluation. It’s been fantastic to share our expertise and help make sure that any gaps are identified in existing data and processes so that when the first surveys are launched, the University team can get a full picture of student sentiment and develop those all-important actionable insights to make real, positive change. As always, we adapted our approach to match the outcomes desired by the University. I’m really looking forward to seeing the results and continuing our partnership over the coming months and years.”
